Welcome to the Startupbootcamp video diaries!
I think the best and most honest way to describe what being at Startupbootcamp is like is to give you access to the 30 international entrepreneurs who joined the program in Copenhagen on August 16th.
It took some cajoling and a bit of arm-twisting to get our recruits to sit in front of the camera. But I think it was worth the effort. Each episode lasts 3 to 4 minutes and has members from two teams sharing their thoughts and experiences as they nagivate the waters of entrepreneurship the Startupbootcamp way.
We'll do a taping session about every two weeks. When we've run through all ten teams, we'll start over. So here comes the first episode, it includes teams
and
.
I'd like to thank the Startupbootcamp teams for playing along. We look forward to your comments.

What do you think we should focus on? Is the iPad as revolutionary as some
it is? Is crowdsourcing anything passé? Are there still exciting things to do with geo-location? What do you think?
Submit your comments below and I'll share a synopsis.

Don't ever feel sorry for VC's - but some empathy could help

Last week I got a little taste of what a top level VC's life is like when they're on the road...

Last week I got a little taste of what a top level VC's life is like when they're on the road meeting startups. (Let's be clear: Startupbootcamp is not a VC firm!)
I had the pleasure of spending a day in Tallinn meeting with Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian entrepreneurs together with
of TechStars. The day was organised by our gracious host Ragnar Sass of the
. We met teams and people back to back from mid-day to late evening and it was an edifying experience!
At the end of a long day I have to admit the startups started blurring. It was difficult to remember who had what idea and more importantly who needed what. You should never feel sorry for a VC, and they often come across as terribly cynical, but this experience taught me that some empathy on the part of entrepreneurs pitching their idea would vastly improve the outcome for them.
So here's some quick notes and tips if you get to meet an investor for 15 minutes:

Show me the demo!
For god's sake, get to the demo! When you're on your tenth presentation or discussion with the same marketing buzz words you just stop listening. Investors want to see what you can actually build. If your prototype isn't ready, show something you've done before. If you're not a programmer give evidence of some success you've had in the past.

Never start with an apology or qualification
"We're only early stage", "This is the first time we pitch". You're never going to have the perfect conditions whether it's pitching to an investor or selling to a customer. Investors know this so they're looking for evidence of your ability to make the best of what you've got. Starting with a negative is just a bad start.

Don't ask others to decide for you
Never ask "should I do X…?" The investor doesn't know and it just demonstrates your indecision. Open ended questions are really hard to bounce on. Rather argue something strongly and let the investor react, you never know, you could start a great discussion.

Don't make someone ask you "how can I help you?"
Tom Keller introduced one team to a very senior connection at Disney and another to a totally relevant senior exec in New York so I know some teams got a lot of value - but in many cases he had to ask "so... how can I help you?". Even if you're not raising funds, every quality investor you meet knows someone who can help your startup so don't waste the opportunity by not asking.

Be different and/or aggressive
At the end of a day with 15 back to back meetings, all the startups and entrepreneurs start to blend together. Have you thought about what you're going to do to stand out? And how will you follow up the meeting?

--> Want a great outcome from meeting an investor? Be sharp and get to the demo; never apologize; start an engaging discussion; be different; and be clear about you want to the point of being aggressive.

Evolution of an Entrepreneur - from Venture Cup to Startupbootcamp

First Friday, Startup Weekend, Startupbootcamp ... this flurry of activity has caused some confusion and I've been asked to clarify what's what, so here goes.
Franck Nouyrigat, the newest member of the Startup Weekend team, was kind enough to share this illustration: "The Evolution of an Entrepreneur". It shows where Startup Weekend fits in the lifetime of an entrepreneur.

I've created an adapted version which shows where Venture Cup, First Friday, Startup Weekend and Startupbootcamp fits in this picture. This is a Danish view of the world - and we see Startupbootcamp as a Northern European initiative - but it makes for a good roadmap if you're planning the evolution of your entrepreneurial adventure.

So what's what?
Venture Cup: an increasingly popular business case competition for students (and anyone they wish to partner with). Students benefit from
by confronting their ideas with serial entrepreneurs and business peopl .
-Who: University students and their partners
-Why: structure your idea and confront it to the real world
First Friday: a monthly networking event for entrepreneurs which I co-founded with Sune Pedersen of OK1.
-Who: entrepreneurs and those who want to help them
-Why: network with a purpose and help your startup by asking for help
Startup Weekend: if you're into startups and you've been paying attention you already know what this is. 100+ cities in 23 countries and 15.000 participants have joined these non-conferences. Pitch your idea on Friday night and spend the next 54 hours working with a crack team. I had the pleasure of running the
edition (and coordinating simultaneous events in the Nordics) and I can guarantee that these are here to say.
-Who: anyone with a startup idea and energy for a weekend
-Why: stop dreaming, get off the fence and get going; then quit your job
Startupbootcamp: A startup accelerator affiliated with the best of the best -
. The real deal and the culmination of two years of dreaming and 6 months of work.
-Who: high potential entrepreneurs with big ideas
-Why: mega boost your startup in three months

A huge week for Copenhagen, Denmark and the Nordics with both TechCrunch Nordic and Mini Seedcamp...

A huge week for Copenhagen, Denmark and the Nordics with both TechCrunch Nordic and Mini Seedcamp coming to town.
Startupbootcamp was well represented at both events and I brought back a couple of observations.

Local talent
The first observation is that there's a wealth of talented people in this region.

As is often the case, the pitches were of uneven quality (if someone can figure out how to get paid to help entrepreneurs make great pitches there's a lot of business out there) but there are some brilliant entrepreneurs in the making; I enjoyed
's pitch at
, and Mihai Gheza of Nugames gave by far the most
of the day at
. Other interesting startups included Swedish
which monitors new products, Danish
which will help local business manage the geolocation jungle, and French
which enables donations to NGO's via email.

were also prominent at both events (among others:
delivered a keynote and both
and
were panelists TC Nordic; and
was a mentor at Mini Seecamp). All in all, a testament to the caliber of our mentors.

The European 'Silicon Valley inferiority complex'
The second observation is that the endless discussion about Europe not having a Silicon Valley equivalent drags on. "Do we have the talent? Do we have the investment dry powder? Do we have the market" and on and on. My answer, to paraphrase another Startupbootcamp Mentor,
of Mangrove Partners: "Who cares? Get on with it!" It's like not going to university because you didn't get into Harvard or not going out to a restaurant because you couldn't get a table at
.

The way we're going to win - assuming this is even a battle - is not by obsessing about replicating something which cannot be replicated. It's by embracing what makes us different. We've got a fragmented, multi-lingual market? We know how to conquer international markets from the get-go! The talent isn't concentrated in one place? We know how to attract and (remotely) manage international talent! Our angels aren't as active? We're better at boostrapping!

Having Mike Butcher of TechCrunch come to Copenhagen and agree that
puts us and the Nordic region on the map. It attracts talent and inspires first-time entrepreneurs to jump off the fence.

As
@davidcohen mentioned in a tweet, if you google "best startup town" you get Boulder, Colorado - a town in the west with 100,000 residents who are a mix of hippies, artists and college students which is neither particularly close to an airport nor cheap to live in. Why are they on the map? Because David,
and others and launched
and a bunch of other initiatives and got on with it.

So apply to Startupbootcamp and get on with it! ;D

-Alex

I've now been in Boulder two days and to say I'm impressed is an understatement.
The teams are very strong and highly motivated; the mentors are impressive (Thursday: Mozilla developers on the future of internet browsing using Firefox - Friday: Google's startup evangelists); and the TechStars team have created this great balance between ambition and a laid back, fun vibe.

Some key take aways about the TechStars startups:
+Pace: Everyone knows exactly how many days there are until Investor Day. Teams are focused and proactive and they work extremely hard.

+Fun: There's a camaraderie already in place between the teams, plenty of social events and opportunities to blow off steam.

+Engagement: Teams are well aware that mentor engagement is a key to success. They research mentors prior to meeting them, come to mentor sessions prepared with questions and give them tasks ("here's how you can help us"). They don't waste these golden opportunities.

Openness to change: I got here on day 4 of the program and a couple of teams had already pivoted their product and business models in major ways based on mentor interaction. Even some who had been working on their products for several months prior to the program.

+Intellectual honesty: a cornerstone of TechStars is that everyone is expected to be direct and open about where they stand, what progress they've made and not made, what they're good at and what they suck at. Saves a lot of time and emotion.

+Independence: David Cohen keeps repeating "that's just my opinion, it's your company." Dozens of very bright and experienced mentors come through and teams often get compelling, but conflicting, suggestions. It's their company, they have to decide what to take and what to throw away.

We're very proud to announce that Startupbootcamp is the first
Global Affiliate.
When
and I first considered launching Startupbootcamp late last year, we reached out to David Cohen who was incredibly helpful and "open source". Not only did we learn a lot but we could see that the chemistry and integrity level matched as well.
We are now building on this and firming up the relationship through an affiliation. David Cohen, founder of TechStars, explains
.
What does it mean concretely?
Cooperating with David Cohen and Tom Keller (who is the Managing Director, International) and the TechStars team is a fantastic opportunity for Startupbootcamp which will make a material difference to our startup participants. This gives us an opportunity to tap into the experience and network of TechStars. Our startup participants will benefit from a very deep mentor pool and the best startups will now have improved access to early-stage investment capital.
TechStars plans to run an annual gathering of its affiliates to enable sharing and relationship building. We will also be sharing "hot desks" enabling members of our respective communities to visit each other's facilities.
I will be visiting TechStars in Boulder later this week and will be sharing my impressions and observations throughout my one-week stay. (keep an eye on
)
Startupbootcamp going forward:
Startupbootcamp is currently screening applications from startup teams across Europe. The most critical factor for us is the team. We are looking for high quality teams who have the complimentary skills and dedication needed to succeed with a startup. The idea is less important since in most cases it will be adapted as a result of the program.

Most of our current applicants are within the tech area, including web enabled services, mobile services and games. These are exactly the kind of startups we like, since they can achieve significant development within the three month period of the program and they have global potential.

Startupbootcamp
close by end of June and the first program runs from mid-August to mid-November.

It's early days for Startupbootcamp. The program launches in August and applications close by end June. We know from the experience of similar programs that 50% or more of applications come in during the last week (nerve wreck, anyone?). We also know that there's a window of opportunity to attract applicants. If they're ready to go now with a great idea why would they wait until June? And if we invite teams too late they will struggle with the logistics and personal issues involved with relocating to Copenhagen for the summer.
But we have received some applications already (in fact we encourage early applications as it gives both parties more time to get to know each other). What is really encouraging to see is the footprint of applicants and queries, see the map below. We see ourselves as a Northern European program. When we were still dreaming about Startupbootcamp we took a map out and drew a circle around Copenhagen which covered most of Scandinavia (minus a few reindeer in northern Finland), the Baltics, parts of Poland and the UK (OK, our circle was a bit wobbly). But we've been positively surprised by the reach we've achieved already. Proves that a great program can attract teams from far and wide. We're certainly open to any nationality and location of team. We want teams to benefit from the mentors, the incubator space, and - perhaps most importantly - from each other by being in Copenhagen for three months but after that ... it's your company, move where you can get the most customers!

Startupbootcamp is fortunate to have some impressive mentors on board who have been around the block a few times (and the
is growing).
We asked Martin von Haller Grønbæk (lawyer and Partner at
) and Jacob Bratting Pedersen (Investment Director at
) to start the debate on a big question for Danish and Nordic entrepreneurs: should you go straight for international VC funding?
We start with the guest blog entry from Martin, followed by Jacob. Have you raised VC money? Share your experience and join the debate by submitting your comments below.

----------------------

Go West young man or woman!

Every aspiring Danish entrepreneur with an idea that needs funding almost automatically turns his or her eyes towards the ecosystem of Danish venture capital firms. As a Copenhagen-based Danish lawyer who specialises in advising start-ups from the region in among other things fundraising, I often advise these entrepreneurs to think twice before they seek out Danish VC-money.

To get an idea off the ground, it is often necessary with only a relatively small amount to fund the basic needs to get the idea into some kind of alpha or even beta version. You need to have something to show, and that it is working in a way so that you can convince customers and others to back you. To get to that point and a little beyond, you will often as an entrepreneur have to bootstrap, and the money needed for that is often raised best by small bank loans, your personal savings, or by raising external funds from FFF (friends, family and fools), or from angel investors. Such external funds are often raised on the most advantageous terms from the people who are relatively close to you, either by relation or by geography.

It is my argument that the next round of financing, the first round of a serious amount of money from venture capitalists, would be best obtained from a truly international venture capitalist firm based in one of the VC centres of the world, ie. London, Boston or Silicon Valley. I would even argue that raising this often considerable amount of money between EUR 1 – 10m from a Danish VC would be counterproductive. Of course the money is always nice to have, and beggers can’t be choosers. But if you in any way as a start-up is in a position to raise funding outside of Denmark, you will be well advised to try so.

In my opinion, and I am sorry to say, Danish venture capitalist firms often do not contribute much more to the party than their money. Of course all Danish VCs employ highly intelligent and well-intended people but compared to the quality and the abilities of international venture capitalist firms, they are simply not in the same league. All too often a Danish VC will not understand, and thus in a qualified way not be able to challenge and improve the business idea, the technology and a market for the start-up. Almost never a Danish VC will have the international network of movers and shakers within the industry to really push the start-up forward in all the right venues and connections.

Admittedly, painting the picture black and white, getting first funding from a Danish VC will often mean that the start-up is put in some kind of limbo for the period of time that it takes to use up the funds. At best they will move forward in development of the product. At worst they will move nowhere for a crucial couple of years not capturing important customers, positioning them within new markets or changing their initial business models radically in due time as is often badly needed. And probably the worst thing is that they after a couple of years – without having moved considerably in the right direction – will have spent 20 – 30 per cent of their equity on funding, and a co-owner who has very little value to offer going forward. You effectively have a dead hand controlling a major part of your project.

Of course trying to raise funding from an international top quality venture capitalist firm is not easy. You are then competing in a global market not just in a small Danish market for funding. Therefore, my advice for start-ups to seek their first round of venture capital funding directly from abroad is only for those who are really ambitious, really talented and have great potential. That is the top tier of Danish entrepreneurs. For the second tier of ideas, among which there are of course also clever, dedicated, enthusiastic and worthwhile ideas, the Danish market for venture capitalist funding is much more suitable.

For the top of the pops Danish start-ups, my advice would be to seek out seed or angel funding among those Danish og regional investors, often individuals that have proven themselves already as entrepreneurs and who have the sufficient international “brand name” and web of contacts to at least be able to guide you as an entrepreneur to present your venture for a high level international venture capitalist firms. Only to the extent that Danish VCs embody the same individual skills and networks, I would recommend to get closely involved with these at that point.

Danish VC's can help you win!

As a Danish venture capitalist representing NorthCap Partners I agree with Martin that it makes a lot of sense for the top tier of Danish entrepreneurs to seek out international VC funding. This is especially true if you are planning to relocate your company headquarters and the entire operation abroad. However, this is seldom the case. In most cases we still see a substantial part of the business being operated from Denmark – even in cases where headquarters and CEO is relocated to a major market like the US. R&D, product management, European sales and marketing, support etc. is often kept in Denmark and these parts of the organization can easily be “left behind” if there are no local investors and/or powerful founders still involved in closely managing the remaining Danish operations and representing their interests in the Board and management. It may sound trivial, but relocating headquarters and CEO often causes some serious borders internally in an organization that can be fatal to the company’s long term survival.
Most top tier international VCs are fully aware of this and that is one of the main reasons it is often a prerequisite to have a local Danish investor on board in order to attract international venture capital. Only very few Danish start-ups are in a situation where they can choose to go 100% with international VC financing. In most cases the international investor will require a Danish VC that they trust to participate in the financing. There are examples of top tier Danish start-ups where this has not been the case, but they are indeed very rare.
No doubt it is hard to find Danish VCs with a network and connections in the US that can compete with those of a top tier US VC. Most Danish VCs are aware of this and as a consequence we at NorthCap Partners do always syndicate with leading international VCs when taking our portfolio companies to the US or UK.
Just to share some experiences in this respect that can be of interest to entrepreneurs is that we quite often see better company valuations when international investors invest and parts of the business are relocated to the US or a green field establishment of e.g. a US sales organization is done. There are some obvious reasons for this. First of all, the company gets close to the largest technology market in the world. Secondly, the company increases the exit potential by a significant factor. It is indeed many times easier and less risky for a large US technology company to acquire a local US company than a Danish company located with 9 hours time difference to the Silicon Valley and with a quite different company culture.
To sum up – in my opinion it makes best sense for most Danish entrepreneurs to initially contact a Danish VC that has the trusted network to international VCs, and have the Danish VC assist in attracting international venture capital financing from VCs in their network. It is rarely a choice between either/or but rather a matter of finding the right combination of Danish AND international VC funding that leverage the full potential of the start-up business.

Clint Nelsen is one of the two managers of Startup Weekend, a non-profit run out of Seattle, Washington. I met Clint Nelsen over Twitter and after trading a few tweets we agreed he should stop by Copenhagen in December 2009 (in between the Paris and Tel Aviv Startup Weekends). We ran a networking event where Clint presented the concept to a small crowd of enthusiast ... a few beers later and we had a super ambitious dream of running simultaneous Startup Weekends in major Nordic cities!

Startup Weekends have been run in over 80 cities around the world but never in the Nordics. A highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more meet on a Friday evening. Anyone can pitch an idea in one minute, then the crowd votes on the best 10 or so ideas. And in a short 54 hours the teams then try to get as far as they can with their startup idea. It is very much like an unconference, where the attendees influence the outcome of the experience.
These events are a fun, energizing and a risk-free way at trying your hand at entrepreneurship with other equally motivated people with different skill sets.
What's the connection with Startupbootcamp? We have the ambition of getting people off the fence, to try their hand at entrepreneurship, to share their startup ideas and to enable match-making amongst entrepreneurs... the best of them can then go on to apply for Startupbootcamp.
